HONOR IN A CANCEL CULTURE

TRUE VIRTUE                                                                                      8-29-21  Pastor Sam Goins

If you’re on a continuous search to be offended, you’ll always find what you’re looking for.

… Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 NIV

Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. 2The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” 3Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. 4Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” Mark 6:1-4 NLT

  • Dishonor:  to treat as common or ordinary

  • Honor: to value, respect, or highly esteem; to treat as precious, weighty, or valuable

  • Respect is earned. Honor is given.

Who Are We Called to Honor?

  • God   If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.  Romans 14:8

  • Our Parents  “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”  Ephesians 6:2,3

  • Those in Authority  Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.  Romans 13:7

  • Our Pastors and Spiritual Leaders  The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.  1 Timothy 5:17

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives, and in his own home.” 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.  Mark 6:4-5 NIV

… Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 NIV

… Outdo one another in showing honor. Romans 12:10 ESV

“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’” Matthew 15:8 NIV
